Benefts of Organic Food

What do you think of when you hear the term organic?  When it comes to food, I think of food grown or produced naturally, without chemicals, and in a environmentally friendly manner. And oh ya, it's more expensive!

It is a fact that organic food is more expensive than conventionally grown or produced food straight at the store. The benefits though I believe are far more valuable then the total at the register, and here are just a few.

Organic foods are grown without the use of pesticides. Pesticides adversely affect our heart and lungs. Pesticides inhibit the reproduction of acetylcholine esterase (think of eraser), which allows acetylcholine to bulid up.  This means it keeps a bugs heart from contracting and relaxing, and their lungs from inhaling and exhaling. They suffer from a heart attack as well as suffocation at the same time. This is occurring in your body, in smaller doses of course.

Organic foods are more dense in nutrients. They pack more of a punch! This means that the more dense the nutrients that are available, the less you need to eat which may lead to less calories consumed. By being able to consume more of the nutrients that our body needs during the day, our bodies can actually survive on less of a caloric intake diet.

$$$.  Eating organic foods may cost more upfront at the grocery store, but in long term may cost you less in more ways then one. By eating organic and limiting your exposure to harmful chemicals, your risk for diseases can be reduced. Our life is a marathon, and not a sprint. By consuming high quality food, without any of chemicals, preservatives, and just plain junk, our body will continue to strive and thrive longer.

Grass-fed beef is healthier than grain-fed beef in many different ways, as described in a study by the USDA and Clemson University. Grass-fed organic beef are raised without antibiotics and hormones which contribute to the health benefits. I recently was introduced to a local grass-fed, grass-finished locally raised cattle ranch in Cornville, AZ! Tres Hermanas Ranch

Wild-caught fish versus farmed fish. Farmed-raised fish contain high contents of mercury, PCB's (which are a fat soluble contaminant which we know goes straight to your heart), and paint...who wants painted fish?! Salmofan is a paint in fish that was originally used in tanning which has been linked to cancer.

So where do we start with all of us? First is to educate yourself. Second, you can just buying organic, make your life simple. However, a great way to start is to think of the "Dirty Dozen" and "Clean Fifteen".

My challenge to you is to try a new organic food and recipe. Tell me the differences you notice in how they look, taste, smell, etc. Try something new!!
